A focused defender, O’Neill explains, “I try to be as calm as I can and do the simple things right and stay solid at the back.”

An experienced centre-back, Rachael O’Neill can also provide her services at full-back and centre-midfield making her a valuable asset in Celtic’s squad. Joining the club’s academy at 11, Rachael crossed the Old Firm divide for two seasons at 17 before rejoining Celtic in 2018. Like many girls, Rachael’s footballing life began in boys teams, playing from 10 at a local boys team alongside the Celtic academy programme to gain valuable early experience.

Outwith club football, she has extensive international experience, reaching the European finals in Norway in 2014 with Scotland under-19s under Gareth Evans. Having been coached at youth level and brought back to the club by now head of women’s football David Haley, the defender has pointed to him as a particular influence on her career, as well as Eddie Wolecki Black who has allowed her this freedom to move higher up the pitch.
