CELTIC… 1
(McGovern 36)

GLASGOW CITY… 2
(Black og 67, Shine 79)

IT was a night of heartache for Celtic at Lennoxtown as they lost 2-1 to Glasgow City in a closely-contested league match. The Hoops had taken a well-deserved first-half lead through Kathleen McGovern, but the same player received a red card after the break and City scored twice to take all three points.

It was a cruel result for Celtic, who deserved to have taken something from the match.

Both sides showed their attacking intent from the first whistle, with chances at either end. With just under 10 minutes of the first-half remaining, it was Celtic who opened the scoring when McGovern slotted the ball home after being played in by Emma Black.

It was a well-deserved goal for the home side, who took that lead into the break. However, just eight minutes into the second-half, the Hoops goalscorer was sent off for a challenge on Leanne Crichton, and City capitalised on the numerical advantage they now enjoyed.

Megan Cunningham in the Celtic goal denied City on a number of occasions before the visitors enjoyed a stroke of luck to draw level.

Jordan McLintock’s shot was initially blocked by Cunningham but it then bounced off Celtic defender, Emma Black and ended up in the back of the net.

And with 11 minutes of the match remaining, City grabbed what would prove to be the winner, with Clare Shinie scoring the goal. The 10-player Celts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but they were unable to breach the visitors’ defence again.

CELTIC: Cunningham, Black, O’Neill (Crosbie 81), Craig, Keenan, Giard, McLaughlin (Hare 71), Clark (Donaldson 75), Hay (Mulvey 63), Ewens, McGovern.
Unused subs: Farrell, Cairney, Hodges
