Ahead of Celtic’s league opener against Forfar Farmington, defender Rachael O’Neill has laid down the marker saying, “if you’re not nervous, you shouldn’t be playing football,” and hopes other Scottish clubs can follow suit as Celtic move towards full time status.

The centre half explained that the team are raring to go with excitement building in the camp as they prepare to welcome the Angus side to K-Park on Sunday 10 February.

“It feels like a long pre-season, but it’s been a good pre-season,” the 22-year-old said at Lennoxtown.

“Personally, I think this is the most prepared we’ve been. The trip to Potsdam really benefited us. To see the players play at that standard was great and hopefully we can bring that into the Scottish game, so we’re looking forward to getting started.”

Enjoying her second stint with the Celtic FC Women, O’Neill admits the anticipation has been building not only because of the enjoyable pre-season programme, but also the changes off the park, something she hopes other clubs across the country will emulate.

“There’s excitement and anticipation and obviously there are nerves there, but that only adds to that, if you’re not nervous, you shouldn’t be playing football,” she said.

“Potsdam put us together well and with all the girls coming in it’s been really exciting, but we’re itching to go now, you can see it in training, everyone has a buzz about them.

“It’s good to see the club putting so much into the women’s game and obviously its adding pressure on us to deliver, but we’ll thrive on that, so the whole pre-season campaign has had a different sort of excitement around it.

“It’s been great to see the changes so hopefully we can see the other clubs in the league do the same,” she added.

Celtic play Forfar Farmington in the first game of the 2019 season on Sunday, February 10 at K-Park in East Kilbride in a 2pm kick-off.
