McGovern: Competition in the squad spurs me on

After climbing off the bench to create a goal and bag her first of the season, Kathleen McGovern explained it’s just been a case of rolling her sleeves up as she stakes her claim to get back into the starting eleven.

The 17-year-old was directly involved in half of the goals in the 4-1 win over Spartans to top Group A and secure SWPL Cup quarter-final qualification, and she was pleased to have contributed and make a positive impact.

“I feel like I worked hard in training all week and I just had to come on and make that impact to show I’m good enough to be in the team,” she told after full-time.

“I need to do what I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks behind the scenes. I need to keep working hard in training and doing stuff away from training.

“Losing a goal was disappointing to be honest, but we got the job done and that was the main thing. We’re into the quarter-finals as well so, can’t really ask for much more because we got the result.”

The loan signing of Anita from Atletico Madrid bolsters Fran Alonso’s attacking options with the 19-year-old starting in both games since her arrival, but McGovern is taking the new competition in her stride, planning to use the experience wisely.

“Competition is good - it does spur me on because you need to step up,” she admitted.

“There’s competition in every position though - we have players to come in and do the job. On the bench against Spartans we had players to come on and make an impact. Having those fresh legs made a difference and when we took players off, it stayed at the same standard because the subs were great.”

The Spartans game brought Group A to a close with the Hoops finishing on top with seven points following their unbeaten run, and despite the stutter at the start in the goalless draw against Glasgow Women, the striker says she’s enjoyed the new format which has given it an added competitive edge.

“I’ve liked it being the group, it’s more competitive I think.

“The first game was obviously really disappointing in terms of the result but since we’ve grown as a group and if you look at the result from City it shows we can compete at the highest level.

“The draw is a while away, but everyone is looking forward to seeing who we get, but we topped the group so that’s the main thing after the game,” she added.
