Texas native and Hoops defender Kelsey Hodges has received one of the highest distinctions in American sports, as she celebrates being named in the University of North Texas’ Hall of Fame class of 2019.

Hodges, who is now studying her masters in sports management at Stirling Uni, said it was an unbelievable honour, as she discussed just what it means.

"It's a massive honour! Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the highest awards you can receive in the US as an athlete. To be nominated and voted in is surreal and I'm still in that shocked, surprised and speechless stage," the centre half explained shortly after receiving the news from across the Atlantic.

Hodges couldn’t believe the news of her inclusion so early on in her career and admitted it left her speechless as she processes the news.

She said: “I knew I was eligible this year since I graduated from university five years ago - but I did not expect to be picked in my first year. There are so many other great athletes that have come before me in every sport.

“It's hard to put into words how it feels, it still feels a bit unreal. But this achievement brings my time at North Texas full circle and showcases all the hard work my team and I put in and everything we accomplished.”

While sports are a big part of student life here, collegiate sports are a completely different ball game in the States. In her time from 2010 to 2013, she was a three-time first-team all-conference selection and won the 2013 Conference USA defensive player of the year, making her mark at the university.

“My college football experience is one of kind and probably one of the greatest experiences of my career overall. College sports is massive and so important back home, so to represent your university for four years is very rewarding. I was fortunate enough to do that in my hometown Denton, Texas which makes it even more special!

"All the hard work and dedication to football over the last 22 years has paid off. It's an incredible feeling and I can't wait to be officially inducted and celebrate with everyone who has helped me reach this point in my career!” she shared.

"We will have an induction ceremonial dinner in October and a half-time presentation at the American football home game all in the same weekend. There will be a whole weekend full of events in front of all the home fans, students and current student athletes. I've been told I will have to also give an acceptance speech so we will see how that goes – I’m not a fan of speaking in front of crowds,” she laughed.

“But besides that, I can't wait for that crazy weekend of fun filled events to celebrate with all my family, friends, and teammates.

“It will be a great homecoming after being away for a year now!” she said.
