Hoops hoping to end Hibs hoodoo

Celtic celebrate goal

Top of the table Celtic travel to Hibs this weekend in an enticing challenge that manager Eddie Wolecki Black believes may well be “a good indicator of where we are as a team right now.”

The Edinburgh side will head into Sunday looking to put a shock 0-0 opener against Spartans behind them, gunning to unlock the Celtic defence and find goal for the first time in 2019. Conversely, the Hoops enter the tie with their tails up after a clinical run out against Forfar Farmington, registering four goals against the Angus side.

Hibs will still provide a real acid test for the Celts early on in the 2019 season, giving a true idea of where they stand against the 2018 double cup.

Despite having lost a host of significant players from last season, Hibs still boast strength and depth, and recruited Colette Cavanagh in the closed season from Celtic. The Edinburgh side experienced the Champions League qualifiers last year, but it was on the domestic front that Grant Scott’s side proved potent in front of goal and suffered only one defeat at the hands of Glasgow City in the penultimate game of the season. Celtic struggled against Hibs last season, but under the new regime, Wolecki Black is hoping to put that head to head form behind them.

The battle of the greens could see one of last week’s scorers mark an impressive milestone in the Celtic jersey with Sarah Ewens in line to make her 50th appearance for the club, with keeper Megan Cunningham also poised to register half a century of appearances, while injured Rachel Donaldson could make a return to the squad.
