Penalty hero Green leads charge in brilliant Glasgow Derby victory

Celtic drew first blood in this season’s Glasgow Derbies as Summer Green’s ferocious penalty into the roof of the net ensured Fran Alonso’s side made it three wins on the bounce in the SWPL1.

The spot-kick in injury time arrived just after Jodie Bartle had looked to find a winner from inside the box, but Green rode the immense pressure to smash the penalty above Jenna Fife in goal after a fine footballing and tactical outing for the Hoops against the much-lauded season favourites.

The hosts came out the blocks quickly searching for an early advantage putting the Celts to defensive work from the off, but the Hoops carved out their own opportunities in the shape of Green sizing up the net from distance and forcing Fife to tip it over the bar from inside the area within the opening ten.

The visitors had a golden opportunity to claim the lead in the 23rd minute. Bartle supplied for Donaldson inside the box, but the onrushing Natalie Ross watched on as her touch was just high. Ten minutes later Chloe Logan was called into action with Rangers breaking quickly from a Celtic corner, with the long ball sent to Zoe Ness who cut in near the byline, but Logan left her line to keep it level.

The hosts began the second period much like Rangers did the first, pressing high right from the off with Sarah Ewens unlucky to see her looping shot from the tight angle inch over, before Lisa Robertson sent a warning shot to Fife with a strike from distance.

With both sides baying for blood, the Celtic defence proved resilient with the back four of Chloe Warrington, Kelly Clark, Caitlin Hayes and Bartle turning in solid shifts, but the derby could rank in Logan’s best performances in a Celtic jersey.

The keeper produced a number of top class saves, with the pick a point-blank block to deny Clare Gemmell in what should’ve been an opener for the home-side on the 51st.

The hosts began to wear as Celtic looked to capitalize on a number of free-kicks awarded near Fife’s penalty box, with Hayes’ header just off target before Anita watched a couple of chances drift just by.

With Celtic’s pressure continuing to mount the dramatic breakthrough finally arrived in injury time. Green was brought down outside the area resulting in Robertson’s freekick being parried away leading to a string of corners, with Bartle eventually controlling the ball well to bury her effort low past Fife. But despite the fine finish, celebrations were quickly dashed as it transcended the referee had pointed to the spot for a hand-ball in the build up.

With nerves of steel, Green stepped up to the mark to rattle an unstoppable penalty high into the roof of the net sending Celtic into raptures as the Hoops sealed all three points in the first Glasgow Derby of the season against the much-pegged title favourites.
