Ewens ecstatic with win after “hardest possible start”

Sarah Ewens struggled to put into words the feeling Kelly Clark’s last minute winner in the opening league game of the season sent through the team, but as she secured a third goal against the champions over two games, she couldn’t praise her teammates enough.

Celtic came from 1-0 down to stun Glasgow City as they opened their SWPL1 campaign with a huge three points against the Champions League quarter-finalists, and Ewens couldn’t hide her joy after Celtic made it two wins in two against their city rivals.

“I’m absolutely buzzing!” she began.

“I’m really glad to have gotten on the scoresheet again and carry my form on, but most importantly we got that last minute goal, and what a feeling!

“I think we completely deserved it. All the girls worked so hard and played some good football, and there’s nothing better than a last minute winner, is there?” she asked, after a breathless night at K-Park.

Ewens’ buried Celtic’s first league goal of the campaign (for the second year in a row) with a crucial, but sensational equaliser just moments after City took a scrappy lead immediately after the restart. And the timing of the goal couldn’t be better, as she hailed the response from the team in what she described as “the hardest possible start”.

“I think it really picked us up. We were disappointed going one down so it was good timing and we really pushed on from there.

“You couldn’t ask for a better start to the league. We obviously had the hardest game, playing the champions, so it was an important win and sets us up well. Hopefully we can kick on and take that performance onto next week.

“The weather was unbelievable but both teams obviously play in it, so you just get on with it, but it was a great occasion, and good to see such a big crowd. They really pushed us on, so thanks a lot everyone who came out.

“You can’t let the occasion get to you though, you need to forget it’s on TV -

you’ve got a game to play and focus on, so I think we done that well,” she explained.

The in-form winger netted an impressive ten times in the last five games of the 2019 season to seal her status as top scorer. And despite the two-and-a-half month break, she has managed to maintain that killer instinct, as she chalked up her fourth in two games with her unstoppable effort.

“When you’re on a run of good form, you don’t want games to stop, you want to keep going. Obviously having that big break, you do feel that wee bit of pressure, but I’m just delighted to carry it on and hopefully I keep helping the team and scoring goals,” she said.
