Celtic will use Hibs pain as motivation ahead of SWPL Cup opener

McGovern wins header against Hibs

After falling to a painful 2-1 defeat to Hibs, Celtic’s frustration and disappointment will be channelled positively with better to come according to Emma Black.

The Hoops held an early lead in Edinburgh, before two goals right at the interval seen the hosts come out victorious. However, Black believes improvement has been made and her side never reached its full potential despite running Hibs right down to the wire.

The defender explained the determined mood within the squad, as the Hoops seek to bounce straight back with a League Cup win over Dundee United on Sunday.

“The girls are disappointed in the result. We did take the lead early on, but as the game went on we didn’t manage it properly, so it’s disappointing,” she conceded.

“We can take some positives though if you look at past results and score lines against them, but we feel we missed a chance. We use it though. We’ll have analysis and work hard at training through the week and use that as motivation going into the rest of the season.”

Despite the points dropped, the result depicted a far different state of affairs when compared to previous meetings between the pair, something Black was keen to point out as she acknowledged the progression already made.

“How disappointed the girls are with the result is a positive as well. We aren’t just accepting only getting beaten 2-1.

“We competed in this game, but that’s us not playing well and it wasn’t to the best of our abilities. We weren’t doing the correct things on the park that we worked on in training,” the 32-year-old continued.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s break from the league and towards a first round meeting with Dundee United, the full-back said: “Dundee United have just been promoted to the Scottish Building Society SWPL2 so it’ll be a tough test for us travelling up there but we’re looking forward to it and we’ll hopefully get a good cup run.”

Celtic travel to Dundee United in the first round of the SWPL Cup on Sunday 24 February in a 4pm kick-off at the GA Arena.
