Kaitlyn Canavan: I’m hoping now’s my chance

Academy forward Kaitlyn Canavan repaid David Haley for giving her a nod, with an assist and two goals against Spartans Development, and hopes this is now her time to cement her spot.

Having set up Celtic’s opener for Rebecca McAllister, Canavan was at the double with her second-half header and low strike helping the Celts on their way to a 9-0 victory at K-Park, the 18-year-old said she was delighted to reap the rewards of her hard work on the training pitch.

“Walking into the changing room I was pleased to see that I’d gotten into the starting eleven,” she began.

“I’ve been working really, really hard at training trying to up my game because we’re all fighting for a position, so to come today and see I was in the starting eleven was really pleasing and I’m glad to get the full 90 minutes under my belt as well.”

The wide-player admitted her confidence has been growing over the past while and was glad to play her part in the match itself.

“At training I’ve been getting compliments and I’ve been scoring, and I feel like it the past couple of games I’ve been getting goals here and there which is pleasing. Today though, to get a scoreline like that shows we’ve got goals throughout the team and not just from certain individuals.

“I’m pleased with both of mine, but it’s always just a bit of a bonus to score a header,” she confessed.

Canavan’s tireless running and constant threat contributed to an undeniably strong performance from the young Hoops on the day which saw Celtic press right up until the last kick of the ball, which landed in the back of the net thanks to Emma Craig’s second.

And it’s that level of professionalism that drives them on says Canavan, who now hopes she’s given the management team food for thought as the season draws to a close.

“It shows the sort of professional we have throughout this team, that we are driven to keep that standard throughout the full season. We know we can’t take our foot off the gas and we’ll always go right up until the end of the season, because every game counts.

“It was a good 90 minutes and a good team performance, so it just gives the coaches something to think about. I’d be really pleased to show up and see myself in the starting eleven again, because I’m putting everything into my game and maybe now’s my chance to earn it,” she said
