Academy manager David Haley lauded praise onto his side after they lifted the SWFL Division 1 Cup last weekend saying they were worthy winners representing a club that is “made to win trophies”.

Celtic Academy convincingly beat Renfrew 6-0 to retain their champions’ status in Edinburgh courtesy of goals from Darcy Molley, Megan Wands, Chloe Warrington and an Emma Craig hat-trick, turning in a performance the manager could only dub as “brilliant”.

“The girls were brilliant,” he began as celebrations rumbled on at Ainslie Park.

“They responded to everything that Renfrew threw at them, so I’m really pleased.”

The Celts had created a deserving and dominating 4-0 advantage at the break after a six-minute blitz seen Molley, Wands and Warrington undo Renfrew, before Craig secured her first from the spot after Henderson was brought down in the area. Despite having essentially put the game to bed, Haley was pleased with how his side managed the second half and kept their composure.

“It was something that we said in the changing room at half time – especially for the first 15 minutes, we had to make sure they managed it correctly and for girls so young they showed a great maturity.

“It was four difficult games to get us here, and then the fact we’ve won it so convincingly is brilliant. The cleansheet is great and Paige McAllister made a big challenge at the end there to make sure we kept the cleansheet, it was really pleasing.

“There were difficult times throughout the campaign but tonight once we got a couple of goals the girls really showed their quality,” he said.

He also praised 18-year-old Craig for her hat-trick but explained how important a night it was for the whole squad.

“I was just making sure she got her hat-trick! I heard it over the tannoy and I wasn’t sure if it was two or three, so I’m delighted for her.

“I’m hard on Emma, I’m really hard on her, but it’s what she needs to grow her game and hopefully she realises it’s for her benefit.

“I don’t know if there is much to say to them, so its about congratulating them and making sure they understand what this is and that its part of their development.

“Celtic are made to win trophies and that’s always part of it, so really pleased to do it,” he added.
